Reach ferries to Bornholm and Trelleborg in a climate-friendly way by train

Press release from the Ministry of Economics, Infrastructure, Tourism and Labour Mecklenburg-Vorpommern:

Meyer: Sassnitz-Mukran ferry port strengthened by additional train connection in summer

Holidaymakers to Sweden and Denmark can again travel comfortably by train to the ferries to Bornholm and Trelleborg during the summer months this year. In the coming holiday season, there will be train connections with interregional connections in Bergen auf Rügen on Saturdays and Sundays. "With the train connections in the summer months to the ferry lines to Denmark and Sweden, we are strengthening the ferry port of Sassnitz-Mukran. Holidaymakers can thus travel climate-friendly and comfortably by train to the popular Bornholm lines and the FRS Baltic from the island of Rügen to the Kingdom of Denmark or the Kingdom of Sweden," said Reinhard Meyer, Minister for Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Tourism and Labour.

Easy connection to the ferry by train

The Danish Baltic Sea island of Bornholm can be reached by ferry in about three and a half hours. The crossing to the southern Swedish town of Trelleborg takes two hours and 30 minutes from Sassnitz.

On all Saturdays and Sundays between 20 May 2023 and 30 September 2023, two return journeys will be offered on the route between Bergen auf Rügen and Sassnitz Fährhafen as line RE27. Hanseatische Eisenbahn will use railcars of the type LVT/S for this purpose. In October (up to and including 21 October 2023), the trains will run on Saturdays due to the reduced timetable of the ferry lines. There will be a connection to and from the ferry to Rønne/Bornholm at midday. In the afternoon, in addition to the Bornholm ferry, there is also a connection to the ferry to and from Trelleborg. In Bergen auf Rügen, there are connections to direct long-distance and regional trains to/from Rostock, Hamburg and Berlin as well as to/from Saxony, Thuringia, Hesse, Bavaria, Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia.

"The RE27 is a small but nevertheless important part of our mobility offensive and activates the potential of the popular tourist ferry connections for local transport. In evaluation of the past season, we are now expanding the offer to two transport days per week until September. I look forward to many holidaymakers taking up the climate-friendly transport offer and travelling by train to the popular island of Rügen and to excursions to Denmark or Sweden," emphasises Daniel Bischof, Managing Director of VMV Verkehrsgesellschaft Mecklenburg-Vorpommern mbH.

"Climate-friendly travel is becoming increasingly important. All the more reason for me to be able to offer attractive travel chains with the IC/ICE of Deutsche Bahn via RE27 of HANS to the ferry service to Denmark and Sweden again this year. So the car can stay in the garage on your next holiday in southern Sweden. This is the way to travel today! We are also strengthening long-distance rail transport on the 'green Vorpommern route' to Berlin and Hamburg," says Alexander Kaczmarek, Deutsche Bahn's Group Representative for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

"We are pleased that the 2022 test operation was convincing and that the service will be doubled this year. We look forward to many passengers using the environmentally friendly travel chain by rail and ship to and from Scandinavia," says René Haber-Henning, Managing Director of Hanseatische Eisenbahn GmbH (HANS).

You can find the RE27 timetable here.

The connection was reactivated last year on a trial basis and will now be supplemented by one additional service day per week. The transport company - Hanseatische Eisenbahn GmbH (HANS) - transported almost 900 passengers on the trains to the ferries last season.

The additional RE27 journeys will be ordered and financed by the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. After the end of the season, all parties involved will jointly evaluate the use of the service and discuss the design of the service for the 2024 season.
