Grants for the basic renewal of the tram network in Rostock

Press release of the Ministry of Economy, Infrastructure, Tourism and Labour

Meyer: Trams have been providing mobility for the people of Rostock since 1881

Rostock, 19 February 2024 The tram network in the Hanseatic and university city of Rostock is to be completely modernised. "The trams in Rostock have been providing mobility for the people of Rostock since 1881. The last major renewal measures on the network took place at the end of the 1990s, with the last expansion measures carried out up to 2006. Due to the stresses and strains of daily operations, various parts of the infrastructure are now due for a complete overhaul," said Reinhard Meyer, Minister for Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Tourism and Labour.

"Our trams and buses reliably transport the people of Rostock and their guests to their destinations 365 days a year. Last year, we transported 43.4 million passengers, four per cent more than in the previous record year of 2019. More than two thirds of them used the tram. Thanks to funding from the federal and state governments, we are in a position to sustainably upgrade our route network in the coming years and continue to offer efficient and attractive public transport in the future," says a delighted Jan Bleis, CEO of RSAG.

Rostocker Straßenbahn AG (RSAG) is the local transport company in the Hanseatic and university city of Rostock and operates six tram and 26 bus lines in the city within the Warnow transport association. According to RSAG, a total of 141 tram stops are served over a route length of 75.8 kilometres. The basic renewal of the tram network is being supported with federal funds in accordance with the Municipal Transport Financing Act (GVFG). The federal government is contributing 13.3 million euros. The total investment amounts to 26,957,000 euros. The basic renewal of various structures such as track systems, substations for the electricity supply, overhead line systems or the control and safety technology will also ensure a high quality of operation in the future. The construction work will be carried out at various locations throughout the Rostock tram network until 2026.
