Extended train service between Schwerin and Hamburg on weekends

Press release of the Ministry of Economy, Infrastructure, Tourism and Labour

Meyer: Making a route in high demand more attractive

Schwerin, 23 May 2023 - Additional trains on the Regionalexpress 1 (RE 1) line:

From 27 May 2023 and thus in time for Whitsun, the VMV-Verkehrsgesellschaft Mecklenburg-Vorpommern mbH has ordered additional trains between Schwerin, Büchen and Hamburg. "With the additional journeys, we want to make the Schwerin - Hamburg route, which is also in high demand for leisure travel, even more attractive. Therefore, as part of the mobility offensive, we are increasing the number of services in time for the Whitsun weekend in 2023 and thus before the start of the summer. This way, we are also better equipped for the expected increase in demand due to the Deutschlandticket thanks to the larger seat capacities," said Reinhard Meyer, Minister of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Tourism and Labour.

Additional trains are available at the weekends

From 27 May 2023 up to and including 30 September 2023, additional services will be offered on the regional express (RE1) line between Schwerin and Hamburg on weekends. This means that an approximately hourly service will be available on the route between the state capital and the Hanseatic city on weekends. "Each additional train on the RE1 line offers about 500 seats as well as space for prams, wheelchairs and bicycles," said Meyer.

"The expansion of services is also a reaction to the experiences of last summer. Especially between Schwerin and Hamburg, the trains were known to be very full at times," said Daniel Bischof, Managing Director of VMV-Verkehrsgesellschaft Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, adding: "Last year we were already looking for solutions together with DB Regio AG. This year we were able to create sufficient resources to order additional trains and thus expand capacities between the state capital and Hamburg. As of the timetable change in December, we are planning to make these weekend trips on the RE1 more permanent as part of the mobility offensive."
